Tempering furnace
|
Tempering treatment is a kind of treatment process by preserving heat of metal parts that are quench hardened or normally treated inside tempering furnace for a period of time, and cooling them at a certain speed to increase material toughness. From metallurgical principle, we know the process of quenching, normalized treatment plus dipping (aging) for workpieces in medium temperature for a period of time can make partial carbide precipitated and can eliminate partial residual stress due to rapid cooling as well. Obviously, tempering treatment effect depends on such factors as tempering temperature, time(namely, cooling rate) etc. With the increasing of tempering temperature, strength and hardness of materials decrease accordingly while material ductility improves instead. Material impact resistance will decrease dramatically around tempering temperature of 300¡æ, this phenomenon is called tempering brittleness. Since there is direct ratio between precipitation of carbon atoms or alloying elements and time, material hardness will decrease with extension of tempering time. Tempering temperature is lower than the critical point of workpieces hardness changes, so material strength is not related to cooling rate. |
